Plumbing Heating College Contractors Association and Academy

The Journeymen Plumbing Apprenticeship Program at PHCC Academy of San Diego is accredited by the US Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship. Students enrolled in the program will be federally registered apprentices. They will complete 156 hours of classroom instruction as well as 2,000 hours of on-the-job training per year for each of the program’s four years. At the conclusion, apprentices will have clocked a total of 8,000 hours on the job and more than 600 hours in the classroom. The curriculum will cover an introduction to the plumbing trade, plumbing safety practices, plumbing tools and materials, plumbing math and drawings, serve and repair problems and solutions, local Code applications, reading commercial drawings, introduction to welding, residential and commercial installation practices, portable water treatment, fundamentals of crew leadership, water pressure booster, plumbing systems in pools, hot tubs, and mobile homes, and medical gas and vacuum systems. Graduates will have the opportunity to take and pass the California PHCC Journey-Level Certification Exam to obtain their PHCC Journeyman Card. They will also earn OSHA-10 Certification. Classes meet one day per week in the classroom. The duration of the program is four years.

Tuition costs $4,000 per year or $2,475 per year for PHCC Contractor Members. There is an entrance exam fee of $50 which is waived for PHCC members.

San Diego City College

The plumbing program at San Diego City College includes theory and hands-on training to prepare students for entry-level employment in the plumbing industry. Course modules include an introduction to plumbing, intermediate plumbing, advanced plumbing, plumbing construction specialties, and plumbing code. Students will participate in an apprenticeship which will encourage practical use of the concepts covered in the classroom. They must be a state registered apprentice in the trade. They will learn standards of safety, reading and interpreting IAMPO uniform codes and residential drawings, identification of plumbing lines and components, installation of DWV piping components and systems, reading and interpreting commercial plumbing drawings, locating buried lines, installation and maintenance of waste pressure booster systems, and much more.
