Completing an approved esthetician program, comprising of at least 600 contact hours of theory and practical instruction, the first step to practicing as an esthetician in New York. The New York State Department of State Division of Licensing Services requires all persons conducting beauty treatments to obtain an Esthetics License. Applicants must be at least 17 years old, provide affirmation of completing the esthetics program (completed by the school director), a doctor’s certificate of good health, and pass the state exam. A temporary license to practice may be issued to applicants.

Atelier Esthetique Institute of Esthetics

Atelier Esthetique Institute of Esthetics teaches esthetician students everything they need to know to become licensed estheticians in New York. The program includes 600 hours of theory and practical instruction that will smooth the transition into the world of work. A fast-track day program, morning program, evening, and weekend schedule is available. The fast-track class meets Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm for 16 weeks. Skin care is the emphasis of the New York School of Esthetics and Day Spa Esthetics Course. Students will learn the facets of skin care including facials, make-up applications, and waxing. The coursework prepares students for certification in Microdermabrasion, Body Treatments, and Chemical Peels. Students who enroll in the Esthetics course at Christine Valmy will learn the latest techniques from industry experts. The rigorous curriculum encourages the development of natural talents and professionalism. How Long Does It Take to Become an Esthetician In New York? 

The required 600-hour educational preparation for licensure and practice in New York requires a time commitment of 5 to 8 months depending on the schedule. The licensing exam and obtaining your license to practice can take 2 to 3 weeks. So, you can be on your way to a rewarding career as an esthetician in just 6 to 9 months.

New York is the fashion capital of the world! Estheticians working in New York City are some of the highest paid in the United States. The average salary is $51,254 for entry-level workers. Experienced estheticians can earn as much as $86,790 per year.  

How Much Does Esthetician School Cost in New York?  

A 600-hour pre-licensure esthetician program is an affordable investment of $4,600 to $8,200 inclusive of tuition, books, kit, and supplies.  

Can I Get My Esthetician License Online in New York?  

The Department of State – Licensing Services encourages the submission of the application for licensure online. Online submission facilitates the time processing of your application and allows you to view your application status and get real-time updates.  

What Are the Requirements to Be an Esthetician in New York? 

Licensed estheticians in New York can provide appearance enhancement services to the face, neck, arms, legs or shoulders for a fee, or any consideration or exchange, whether direct or indirect. The license makes provisions for them to use compounds or procedures including makeup, eyelashes, depilatories, tonics, lotions, waxes or sanding and tweezing. Procedures may be performed manually, mechanically, chemically, or with electrical instruments – not including electrology.  

Anyone practicing esthetics must first obtain a license from the Division of Licensing. The license does not permit the operation of a business – this requires a separate business license.  

Once obtained, your esthetics license is valid for four years.   

Steps to licensure:  

  • Submit your application for licensure on the New York State e-Licensing system. Go to the MY NY.gov Online Services page to sign up for a NY.gov ID account if you do not have one.  
  • Provide proof of age – you must be at least 17 years of age  
  • Provide proof of completing a 600-hour approved course of study – the affirmation of the NYS Approved Schooling section of the application must be completed by the school’s director 
  • Provide proof of passing the New York State written and practical examinations. The affirmation of New York State Approved Schooling section of the application must be completed by your school director as proof of successful completion 
  • Have a physician, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner complete and date the Health Certification section of the application – application must be submitted within 30 days after the health certification is signed and dated  
  • Provide documentation of completing a 1- hour course on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness 

Applicants educated outside of New York State may apply for licensure and are eligible for temporary license. The DOS may waive the NYS schooling requirement if you can document an equivalent level of schooling from another state or country. To qualify via this route, you must submit: 

  •  A certificate of completion  
  • Official transcripts listing subjects and hours completed, AND 
  • Current licensure from your state or certification from the state board confirming hours claimed if you are not licensed.  

If you have five years of legal experience in an occupation equivalent to Esthetics, you may apply for a New York State license by submitting satisfactory evidence of education and experience. 

 This includes:   

  • An original certification from the licensing agency you were previously licensed 
  • Two experience statements filled out by former employers, co-workers, clients, that can vouch for your experience in the state for at least five years.  Experience statements must include EXACT dates (month and year of start of service and month and year of end of service), location, and specific services that you performed.              
  • Copy of tax returns that indicate Esthetics as an occupation 

Experience from outside the United States may also be acceptable.  

 Endorsement An applicant who holds an Esthetics license in another jurisdiction may obtain an Esthetics license in New York through endorsement without examination or further education.  

The cost of initial licensure is $40. There is an extra $10 fee for a 6-month temporary license. Fees are payable by American Express, MasterCard or Visa.
